My Luxurious Spring Break in Thailand with 120K Hilton Points
I escaped graduate school for a luxury spring break in Thailand by using 120,000 Hilton points to book the Cape Kudu Hotel. This stay was worth $1,400 in cash, but I secured it at no cost by leveraging the "5th Night Free" perk and a sign-up bonus from my Hilton Surpass card. My Gold status also provided great benefits, including a room upgrade, daily breakfast, and a complimentary longboat excursion.

The Rich Grad Student
I spent spring break 2025 in Thailand and Cambodia, hoping to experience the best of Thai hospitality while taking a break from graduate school. I started looking at 5-star hotels in the Phuket area, but during peak season, prices ranged from $200 to $500 per night. A five-day stay would have cost us over $1,000 just for accommodations. That was out of the question.
Recently, Hilton acquired Small Luxury Hotels of the World, adding some of the most attractive point redemption options to the Hilton ecosystem. I booked the Cape Kudu Hotel on Koh Yao Noi, a quiet island easily reached from Phuket Airport via an hourly ferry.
Koh Yao Noi is far from the busy tourist zones of Phuket and offers breathtaking views of Phang Nga Bay. For March 2025, the cash price for our five-night stay was $1,400. The same room was available for 30,000 Hilton points per night. Thanks to my Hilton Gold status (earned through the Hilton Surpass card), the fifth night on any points redemption is free. So I booked the entire five-night stay for just 120,000 points.

That redemption gave us $1,400 in value for 120,000 points, which works out to 1.16 cents per point. For Hilton points, which are typically valued at around 0.5 cents each, this was an exceptional deal.
How Did I Get 120K Hilton Points?
I signed up for the Hilton Surpass card, which offers a welcome bonus of 125,000+ points. The minimum spend to unlock the bonus was relatively manageable: $3,000 within six months. I hit the requirement and used just 120,000 points to book a stay worth $1,400. That means I essentially got over 50 percent back on my spending. Even with the annual fee, the card more than paid for itself through generous perks and credits.
What Other Benefits Did I Access?
Thanks to my Hilton Gold status (earned through the Hilton Surpass card, I was upgraded to a sea view room at check-in and enjoyed the hotel’s excellent breakfast at no extra cost. As an added perk, the hotel offered a complimentary longboat excursion to Cape Kudu Island for Hilton Gold members and above.

One of my favorite moments from the trip happened during that excursion and ended up inspiring the name of our website. As we stepped onto a pristine white beach, an American couple watched us disembark. The husband asked, “Are you on your honeymoon?” I replied, “No, just a random trip.” He took off his sunglasses, looked at us, and said, “Oh, you must be rich.” I smiled and said, “Yeah! I’m a grad student.”
